INTRODUCING STEPHEN BRANDON
I am absolutely delighted to be welcoming Senior UK Vinyasa Krama teacher Stephen Brandon to The Ananta Yoga Studios this April 2018 – for what we hope will be the first of many visits! This will be Steve’s first ever visit to Ireland and we are honoured to have him with us.

Having commenced a 100 hour training in Somerset in August 2017 with Steve, I have been personally inspired and illuminated by his authenticity and delivery of classical yoga in its purest form as transmitted to him by his Guru and friend Srivatsa Ramaswami.   Sri Ramaswami – over a 34 year period – received these teachings directly from Professor Tirumalai Krishnamacharya the father of modern yoga. 

It is difficult these days to be as close to the source of authentic yoga as this. I really hope that you can join me in a great weekend of yoga with Steve and share in this wonderful ancient wisdom. ABOUT STEPHEN BRANDON 
Stephen Brandon has studied Yoga under some outstanding teachers from Sri T. Krishnamacharya’s lineage since 1999, including TKV Desikachar, T.K. Sribhashyam, A.G. and Indra Mohan, Srivatsa Ramaswami (Krishnamacharya’s student for 34 years). Stephen trained in Viniyoga with Ranju Roy and Paul Harvey. Since 2007, Stephen has trained extensively in Vinyasa Krama Yoga and Yoga Philosophy with Srivatsa Ramaswami in India, the USA and the UK and maintains a personal practice in Yoga and Ayurveda. 

Stephen is a teacher trainer and has a private practice offering personal lessons and Yoga therapy. He is also qualified in Ayurveda and is a member of the Ayurvedic Practitioners Association. He is the author of The Vinyasa Krama Practice Manual.

ABOUT VINYASA KRAMA
The word “Vinyasa” is used to describe many different styles of yoga classes these days and is associated with flowing breath connected sequences (Kramas) of asanas/postures. 

However – what many students of yoga do not realise is that this broad use of the terms “Vinyasa” and “Krama” in todays yoga circles are not the same as the very structured, definitive system and traditional methodology of the original Vinyasa Krama Yoga as taught by Krishnamacharya to his disciple Srivatsa Ramaswami and by Ramaswami to Stephen Brandon and his other students.

Krama is an art form of practising yogasanas, based on the parameters mentioned in the Yoga Sutras. Sri Krishnamacharya taught this method of asana practice in which numerous asana movements or vinyasas are practised in succession, slowly and with synchronisation of breath in an intelligent and progressive way leading the practitioner towards the internal practices of meditation and samadhi.

Vinyasa Yoga develops strength and flexibility. It improves circulation of blood, lymph and life energy (prana). It’s a simple, enjoyable and effective way of exercising all joints, muscles and tissues of the body without stressing the heart. The movements are slow and synchronised with ujjayi breathing which concentrates the mind and brings it into a state of peace. 

With its emphasis on synchronised breathing and moving, the system prepares the person to sit with steadiness and comfort for the more subtle practices of pranayama and meditation which are included in each class. The whole process gradually transforms the body and mind, releasing old patterns of mental tension and dysfunctional patterns of movement.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE WEEKEND
In this course you will be introduced to Vinyasa Yoga in a comprehensive manner including pranayama, bandha, mudra and meditation based on the Yoga Sutras. Stephen will transmit the method as he learnt it directly from Srivatsa Ramaswami. The mental attitudes and breath control required in Yoga are cultivated within the practice.

This workshop will cover the theory and take students through several defined Vinyasa sequences of the practice along with a focus on Yoga Psychology, Pranayama, Mantra, and Meditation.It is suitable for students of all levels including beginners as well as teachers as modifications & variations of all postures present themselves as part of the progressive nature of the sequences.

WORKSHOP WEEKEND SCHEDULE AND SESSION OPTIONS

Friday 27th April         

 7.00pm – 9.00pm 
Introducing Vinyasa Krama Yoga – A Lecture with Stephen Brandon

(Open to all students and this session can be taken on its own. It is strongly recommended to attend this lecture if taking part in the rest of the weekend as it will lay the foundations for the workshop)

Vinyasa Krama Yoga is a methodology that Krishnamacharya taught to his student Srivatsa Ramaswami in Chennai and is a complete, integrated method aligned with the Yoga philosophy of Patanjali and supported by the methods of Hatha Yoga. 
Steve has been Ramaswami’s student for ten years and has studied the system along with the philosophy that informs it. In this session Steve will present the history of the method followed by an explanation of its principles, aims, benefits and the desired final outcome.

Saturday 28th April – 

Session 1 –          9.00am – 12.30pm
The Essentials of Vinyasa – On your feet asanas.

Theory and practice. Tadasana sequence, a comprehensive sequence that moves all the joints and includes all spinal movements. Trikonasana sequence, an energising and engaging sequence that activates a full hip movement. One leg balances. Lead and return sequences and Sun Salute.

Session 2 –           2.00pm – 5.30pm
Asana – A Seat (Part 1)

In this session we will explore Seated Asana, Mudra, Bandha & Pranayama . We will look at how to master the Seats over time and refine them using various vinyasa sequences. It is considered essential to master a seated position to practice pranayama and meditation.

Sunday 29th April

Session 1            9.00am – 12.30pm 
Vishesha Vinyasas including Sun Salutation with Vedic Mantras

Vishesha or special sequences will be covered in this session. We will learn the postures, sequencing and breathing for the classic Sun Salute sequence. We will then learn the mantras and follow this with practice of the complete method. Further Vishesha sequences will then be explored.

Lunch –                12.30pm – 1.30pm

Session 2             1.30pm – 4.00pm 
Seated Asana, Mudra, Bandha and Pranayama – (Part 2)

In this session we will look at the important effects of Asana, Mudra, Bandha and Pranayama and follow a sample practice applying the methods in an integrated way.

The Four Classical Mudras
There are four classical mudras that Yogis are required to master; Maha Mudra, Paschimottanasana, Sirsasana and Sarvangasana. We will practice these postures and then follow a sequence that includes them all followed by a seated posture with pranayama and bandha.

Alternative postures will be given for those unable to practice inversions.

Please Note -There will be a 15-20 minute break in each session at an appropriate time to suit practice and student comfort.
