Srivatsa Ramaswami

Srivatsa Ramaswami  is a direct student of the legendary Krishnamacharya.  He is also the longest standing student outside the master’s own family. He commenced studies with his Guru at the tender age of 15 and studied  extensively with him for over thirty four years until Sri T. Krishnamacharya’s passing.  Srivatsa Ramaswami remains a faithful disciple to his Guru to this day and has made it his life’s work to propagate the ancient yoga teaching, lineage and methods as transmitted exactly to him by his Guru – Krishnamacharya.

Ramaswami has taught Yoga for many years in India, the U.S.A. Europe and UK and is the author of a number of books on Yoga including The Complete Book of Vinyasa Yoga, Yoga for The Three Stages of Life and Yoga Beneath the Surface with his student David Hurwitz.  He has made many recordings chanting the Vedas and other texts.

During his studies with Krishnamacharya he learnt the full spectrum of asana and pranayama practice and had extensive studies of the important Yoga texts.

This included:

  • Patanjala Yogasutras
  • Samkhya Karika
  • Hathayogapradipika
  • Bhagavad Gita

He studied the following Upanishads under his acharya:

  • Chandogya
  • Taithiriya
  • Svetasvatara
  • Isavasya

Ramaswami also studied vedic chanting.

He has been teaching for many years in India, at Kalakshetra (for 20 years, and recognized as an Institution of National Importance by the Govt. of India), Ramachandra Medical University, Yoga Brotherhood and others.

Srivatsa Ramaswami has taught workshops and Teacher Training Programmes in the US at the Esalen Institute, Loyola Marymount University, Yoga Works, the Himalayan Institute, Chicago Yoga Center and many others. In the UK he has taught workshops in London, Bristol, Edinburgh, Taunton, Wells and a Vinyasa Krama Yoga retreat at EarthSpirit Centre, Somerset.  He has taught programmes and trainings throughout Europe in recent years.   He is a registered Yoga Teacher with the Yoga Alliance at the E-RYT 500 (500 hour) level.

We are truly blessed and very grateful to be receiving Ramaswami’s teachings directly this coming October in Ireland.  It is rare these days to have access to a teacher of this calibre who is so close to the authentic, traditional teachings of Krishnamacharya.

Vinyasa Krama Yoga

The word “Vinyasa” is used to describe many different styles of yoga classes these days and is associated with flowing breath connected sequences (Kramas) of asanas/postures.

However – what many students of yoga do not realise is that this broad use of the terms “Vinyasa” and “Krama” in todays yoga circles are more often not the same as the structured, definitive system and methodology of the original Vinyasa Krama Yoga as taught by Krishnamacharya to his disciple Srivatsa Ramaswami.

Vinyasa Krama Yoga is a methodology that Krishnamacharya taught to his student Srivatsa Ramaswami in Chennai and is a complete, integrated method aligned with the Yoga philosophy of Patanjali and supported by the methods of Hatha Yoga.

Krama is an art form of practising yogasanas, based on the parameters mentioned in the Yoga Sutras. Sri Krishnamacharya taught this method of asana practice in which numerous asana movements or vinyasas (up to 700) – are practised in succession, slowly and with synchronisation of breath in an intelligent and progressive way leading the practitioner towards the internal practices of meditation and samadhi. It consists of twelve major sequences. Each sequence contains a classic yoga posture and variations of movement (vinyasa) which lead to the mastery of that posture with systematic practice. Transitional movements between sequences, numerous vinyasas within each sequence and counter-postures bring great variety to a regular practice.

Vinyasa Yoga develops strength and flexibility. It improves circulation of blood, lymph and life energy (prana). It’s a simple, enjoyable and effective way of exercising all joints, muscles and tissues of the body without stressing the heart. The movements are slow and synchronised with ujjayi breathing which concentrates the mind and brings it into a state of peace.

Asana means “Seat”.  With its emphasis on synchronised breathing and movement (Hatha Yoga), the system prepares the participant to sit with steadiness (sthira) and comfort (sukham) for the more subtle practices of pranayama and meditation (Raja Yoga) which are included in each class. The whole process gradually transforms the body and mind, releasing old patterns of physical and mental tension and dysfunctional patterns of movement.  The other important angas or limbs of Patanjali Yoga are introduced from the very beginning so the student is empowered and encouraged to develope a well-rounded and complete personal practice from the start of their journey rather than purely focusing on asana which has become the norm in many western yoga classes these days and carries with it many unknown risks for the aspirant when practiced without the other limbs.

In this course you will be introduced to Vinyasa Krama Yoga in a comprehensive manner including pranayama, bandha, mudra and meditation based on the Yoga Sutras. Srivatsa Ramaswami will transmit the method as he learnt it directly from his Guru  – Krishnamacharya.  The mental attitudes and breath control required in Yoga are cultivated within the practice.

This workshop will cover the theory and take students through several defined Vinyasa sequences of the practice along with a focus and some talks on Yoga Psychology, Pranayama, Mantra, and Meditation.  It is suitable for students of all levels including beginners as well as teachers as modifications & variations of all postures present themselves as part of the progressive nature of the sequences.
